ROMANCE IS ALIVE AND WELL!

A survey of more than 2,000 people, conducted by the booking website hotels.com, is claiming to show the most and least romantic places in Britain - topical for those loving couples looking for a Valentine's Day break.

So, in descending order of romanticism, here they are!

IN 10TH PLACE, IS... BRIGHTON.

Percentage of votes: a measly 2 per cent. 
The Sussex seaside hasn't yet lost all of its considerable allure, according to those surveyed. Brighton is possiblly most famous for the great beaches, the Royal Pavilion and its gorgeous Regency architecture, but there really is so much more to discover in this lovely seaside town.Take a look at our city guide for ideas on where to stay.

9. OXFORD

Percentage of votes: just 2 per cent again.
Some romantic people do still dream of the dreaming spires it appears.

8. DEVON

Percentage of votes: 5 per cent, that's more like it. 
Craggy coves and cream teas, surf breaks and strolls, picnics and pints in pub gardens - holidays in Devon are wholesome, simple and scenic, a lot of those surveyed agreed. 
A perfect base from which to explore this beautiful County is Exeter, located on the south coast. The city has a stunning cathedral, a smart new pedestrian shopping area and entertainment centre and the River Exe offers the chance of romantic walks along it's banks. 7. YORK

Percentage of votes: only 5 per cent...huh? 
Few cities can rival York for history and character - nor romance, it would seem. 6. EDINBURGH

Percentage of votes: 6 per cent...I'm shocked. 
As our Edinburgh expert Helen Pickles says: "This city pushes so many buttons, you'd have to be a frigid Philistine to visit and remain unmoved." Thoughts of Edinburgh immediately bring to mind the famous Castle, the tattoo, the Edinburgh Festival, great Princes Street shopping and of course, that wonderfully charming and sophisticated accent!  You'll be spoilt for choice for somewhere to stay when you browse our city guide:

5. STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

Percentage of votes: the Bard says 6 per cent. 
The romance of Shakespeare extends to couples searching for that special Valentine's Day out, it would appear.

4. LONDON

Percentage of votes: 9 per cent. 
The only city to appear on both the least romantic and most romantic lists!
There is something about London, after all. Whether you arrive by tube, train, or inside one of the city's ubiquitous black cabs, you'll immediately realise that although this city has been around for nearly 2000 years and has a deep sense of history, it retains a youthful exuberance and unique vibrancy that's hard to beat. Most romantic area? It's just got to be Piccadilly Circus with Cupid firing his bow!

3. THE COTSWOLDS

Percentage of votes: a high 11 per cent.
Those honeycomb houses, gently rolling hills and snug fireplaces: lovers just can't get enough of them. 2. CORNWALL

Percentage of votes: gracious me, 13 per cent...who knew? 
All those hidden coves, stories of shipwrecks and smuggling, and bracing walks in the countryside. Its enough to send a shiver down the spine, and I'm married!

AND THE NO 1 IS...WAIT FOR IT...THE LAKE DISTRICT!

Percentage of votes: an amazing 30 per cent!
The Lake District has Britain's finest scenery, greenest countryside and grandest views, says our expert on the region, and this, it seems, is a winning combination for those looking for love. My parents had their honeymoon there. I was born 9 months later. Nuff said. We have a winner.

And finally, the most unromantic? 
We have another winner. Scunnie claims top spot.
The dubious honour unfortunately, as voted for by 2000-odd people, goes to Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, known as the "industrial garden city".

Great name though.
